de montañas submarinas el fuego hace islas [from underwater mountains fire makes islands] Curated by Yina Jiménez Suriel
The exhibition de montañas submarinas el fuego hace islas [from underwater mountains fire makes islands] was curated by Yina Jiménez Suriel at Pivô and co-presented by KADIST (September 3–October 29, 2022). Drawing from the evolution of aesthetic tools created by communities around the world, this exhibition speaks to those who have thought and desired freedom from outside the Western imagination, and identifies the trace or the evolution of these aesthetic tools in contemporary artistic practices.
A screening series of moving image works, some drawn from the KADIST collection, took place as part of the exhibition at Pivô and at the Plaza de la Cultura, organized by Cinemateca Nacional, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (October 26 and November 2, 2022).
de montañas submarinas el fuego hace islas is part of a curatorial research project that Yina Jiménez Suriel began in 2019, that aims to expand the understanding of human subjectivities in creating new and different imaginaries. Her research has focused on the perceptual system of the human species and how aesthetic thinking can contribute to and alter its future.
