Through photography and video, Yoko Asakai explores situations related to social contexts. Her work captures moments in which people are deeply engaged in something and forget themselves, often in relation to nature, seasons, and their flux. Through this imagery, she investigates how the camera reflects and encapsulates the deep interactions between humans and their environments. Asakai develops a very subtle work which takes into account the distance between the observer and the observed; her images simultaneously portray a unique sense of physical proximity and psychological distance with her subjects. The artist is also known for her landscape photographs; the series Passage (2011) captures sceneries in northern Japan, with electronic signage displaying wind speeds, to caution inhabitant against danger in these harsh environments.
