The Frequencies of Tradition publication culminates a decade of curator Hyunjin Kim’s research and offers a comprehensive account of the curatorial and artistic journey of the eponymous series of seminars, commissions, and exhibitions that reflect the intricate relationship between tradition and modernization across Asia.

Designed to function as an extensive archival record of the exhibitions, it leverages pre-existing materials from the three host institutions. Readers will find documentation of 80 artworks by 26 artists, a curatorial statement, essays or textual reflections on the project and its context, and conversation among contributors. QR codes within the publication also provide the opportunity to experience the exhibitions and public programs virtually.

Frequencies of Tradition was initiated by KADIST in 2018 as part of its international programs devoted to drawing connections between different localities by addressing shared issues, often of global relevance. Curated by Hyunjin Kim, who served as KADIST’s Lead Regional Curator for Asia (2017- 2020) and later as the Artistic Director at Incheon Art Platform (2021), this collaborative endeavor was grounded in partnerships and close conversations with artists, researchers, and institutions around the world. Three exhibitions unfolded at the following international venues: Guangdong Times Museum in Guangzhou (2020-2021), Incheon Art Platform (2021- 2022), and KADIST San Francisco (2022).

The publication is dedicated to all the artists, collaborators, and institutions who have inspired and made this project possible:
