João Maria Gusmão and Pedro Paiva: One month without filming
For the first major exhibition by the duo in Los Angeles, Gusmão and Paiva travelled to Japan to produce a new body of films that approach centuries-old ceremonies that overlap with daily life objects and rituals. Juxtaposed with past works, these films transform the gallery into an installation in which several 16 mm projectors run simultaneously to create a “floating” composition of images in motion. In this constructed darkness, deprived of sound and with only the analog noise of the projector itself, the REDCAT gallery becomes the representation of a mental interior device that produces meaning in scattered fragments. One month without filming is a co-production of Kadist and REDCAT, with generous support from The Andy Warhol Foundationfor the Visual Arts, The Gulbekian Foundation, Lisbon and Tagushi Art Collection, Japan.
