Se concentrant sur le temps de recherche, the backroom présente un ensemble de documents comme autant de sources et d’outils participant à la production de chaque artiste invité. Initiée en 2005 à Los Angeles, cette archive temporaire et évolutive réunit des objets, vidéos, magazines, photographies, bases de données et anecdotes, collectés auprès d’artistes, cinéastes, écrivains et architectes, à partir desquels se développe une série de présentations et projets.

The backroom is run by Magali Arriola, Kate Fowle and Renaud Proch.
The backroom is a research-oriented project that provides access to source materials which inform and support artists’ practice. Initiated in August 2005 in Los Angeles, the temporary archive includes objects, videos, magazines, photographs, ephemera, data and written anecdotes from an evolving line-up of over forty artists, filmmakers, writers and architects, from which a series of presentations and projects have developed.
