The Incurable Image
About the event Elhaik says: “as an anthropologist and a moving-image curator I often encounter volatile material that erupts unexpectedly and threatens the psychic economies of all those engaged in the conversation. A limit to both ethnographic and curatorial practice, this unconscious material is often symptomatically discarded or controlled by the milieu where it intrudes and shows up. I have come to rely on the psychoanalytical concept of the Incurable to work-through this material. The Incurable Image explored in my eponymous book-in-progress points to the limit of the psychotherapeutic treatment and of curation itself. Building on the ethical and clinical register of the word curation, both talk and session hope to inititate a small scale conversation where incurable images serve as a point of departure to play with the ‘non-sense’, as Winnicott would have it, of the work of curation.”
