Two biennials in the Americas
Kadist hosts a conversation about the evolution of two biennials in the Americas, with Dominic Willsdon, curatorial fellow for the 9th Bienal do Mercosul in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and Candice Hopkins, co-curator of SITElines, Santa Fe, New Mexico (formerly Site Santa Fe Biennial). They’ll introduce their respective curatorial programs in progress, and compare some of the changing features of international biennials through questions of local vs. global, transparency, long term thinking, and the outcomes of collective research.
“[Like Mercosul] some other biennials are now projecting ahead a multi-year continuity. SITE Santa Fe recently announced a six-year program under the title SITElines. The Liverpool Biennial is planning to become a year-round, every year platform in the city. Biennials are adopting something of the temporality of museums. A realignment of museum and biennial functions is emerging.”
