Addressing Wikipedia’s gender gap
Time: 12-6pm
Location: Kadist Art Foundation, 3295 20th Street, San Francisco
Please join us in addressing Wikipedia’s gender gap by attending our satellite edit-a-thon during International Women’s Day weekend on March 7th, 2015. We will spend the afternoon participating in a communal update session as we work together to improve and add Wikipedia entries on subjects related to art and feminism. This will be one of many satellite edit-a-thons taking place over the same weekend in conjunction with the primary event at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Wikipedia’s gender trouble is well documented. In a 2011 survey, Wikimedia found that less than 13% of its contributors are female.[1] The reasons for the gender gap are up for debate: suggestions include leisure inequality, how gender socialization shapes public comportment, and the contentious nature of Wikipedia’s talk pages. The practical effect of this disparity, however, is not. Content is skewed by the lack of female participation. Many articles on notable women in history and art are absent on Wikipedia. This represents an alarming aporia in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge.
Join us and help address this disparity at the Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon on Saturday, March 7, 2015, from noon to 6 pm at Kadist Art Foundation, 3295 20th Street, San Francisco.
