Saâdane Afif
Lyrics: Edition

Since 2004 Saâdane Afif has been asking his friends—usually artists, writers, or critics—to write lyrics inspired by his artworks. This simple experiment rapidly turned into something with a greater importance. The resulting texts not only question the notion of interpretation and commentary on a work of art; they have since become a fundamental resource in Afif’s artistic practice. In the contexts of his exhibitions, Afif gives these texts to different musicians. Their musical interpretations offer various mutations of the original ideas from which the artworks arose. This particular iteration titled Lyrics: Edition brings together ephemera from the project including a poster, and cupboard containing audio, video, and reading materials related to the project.

Saâdane Afif’s multifaceted work draws on the know-how of craftsmen, musicians, and writers in collaborative projects that challenge the very concept of the unique work of art or the individual creator. Afif, who describes himself as a “talkative conceptual artist”, uses forms of popular culture, such as music, to bring people together in a shared moment of creativity. Through the exploration of different media, including performances, objects, sculptures, texts, and posters, the artist provokes both the collapse and the expansion of the notion of creative paternity.
