Jason Fulford
Mushroom Box

Jason Fulford’s Mushroom Box is a multimedia artwork that blends elements of photography, conceptual art, and installation. The work features a collection of photographs and objects arranged within a filing box, creating a narrative that is both fragmented and cohesive. Fulford’s work often revolves around themes of chance, discovery, and the enigmatic nature of everyday objects. In Mushroom Box, he uses the motif of mushrooms—symbols of both decay and growth—to explore the interplay between nature and human perception. The box format invites viewers to engage intimately with the artwork, encouraging a sense of exploration and curiosity. The photographs depict mushrooms in various states and contexts, evoking a sense of wonder and the uncanny. Fulford’s careful curation of images and items within the box transforms it into a miniature world, prompting viewers to consider the hidden stories and connections between seemingly disparate elements. Mushroom Box is a contemplative piece that challenges viewers to find meaning in the ordinary and the overlooked.

Photography and book publishing are inextricable in the work of Jason Fulford; the craft and design of bookmaking and a keen attention to the visual associations between images is in the foreground of his practice. As a photographer, Fulford’s images are informed more by discovery than invention, as the artist is an unquenchable seeker who often travels to distant corners of the globe. Recurring motifs in his work include dry humor, games of chance, formal echoes, and the relationship of a picture to a story. Storytelling and performance also play supporting roles in Fulford practice, both in concocting events as stages for his photographic work, weaving mystic fictions around his book projects, or as a lark, in one of many informal collaborations with his partner Tamara Shopsin. Fulford is a co-publisher of the long-running J&L Books (with Leanne Shapton), as well as the maker of six monographs collecting and sequencing his photography.
