Periquitos (Parakeets) is a cartoon-like giant television with a screen made of four vertical strips of blue, yellow, green, and red acetate. There is a recurring figure on the screen, which is taken from a photograph of the artist at age six. The acetate references a practice from Marepe’s region in which owners of black-and-white televisions attached colored acetate to their screens in order to see images in color.
Marepe (acronym of Marcos Reis Peixoto) is from an area in North Eastern Brazil where much of the inspiration for his work originates. His sculptures and installations are steeped in the culture, traditions, festivals and personal memories associated with his birthplace as well as his interactions with European culture.
