Liu Yin is an artist and painter, initially trained in realism, whose cartoon-like paintings and drawings explore the ambivalences of love, nature, and consumerism. The scenes she pictures belong to the realm of childhood dreams, expressing both desire and anxiety through delicate colours and playful figures. Before developing the signature painting style she is best known for today, Liu Yin showed interest in various forms and subjects. As early as 2010, her projects included paintings, sculptures, neon pieces, videos, writings, and readymade. She later engaged in a distinctive painting technique, referencing manga imagery and pop culture, to address political, social and historical subjects with an unconventional stance. Playing with perceptive codes and habits, Liu points with a singular naiveté to silent forms of repression and inequality, especially regarding gender and personal freedom.
