Trisha Donnelly
Untitled

Untitled is a black-and-white photograph of a wave just before it breaks as seen from the distance of an overlook. This photograph is one of a few that the artist has made of sea waves. In this one—more serene than the earlier Black Wave (2002), but more broken than the 2010 untitled version that would follow—a wave curves diagonally up through the center of a grey ocean, producing a diffused web of white water. Trisha Donnelly’s wave implies fluidity, tranquility, and the rippling of time and ideas across time.

Trisha Donnelly (b. 1974, lives in New York) is an artist who moves through different media, often translating between them or pushing their boundaries. Every aspect of her work’s execution and presentation—from its title and press release to exhibition wall texts—is included in this play. Through these material and conceptual strategies, Donnelly engages with ideas about time, presence, and the imagination. She received her MFA from Yale University in 2000 and her BFA in from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1995. Recently, she was awarded the 2017 Wolfgang Hahn Prize.
